The early church father Origen, for example, used it to refer to books that were to be kept out of public reading in church liturgies. But which books counted as “apocryphal” was something that changed over time and depended on who you asked. Webapocryphal books have been printed in most versions of the English Bible (including the KJV) from earliest times until 1827, when they were omitted. Since that time, Protestants, especially, have regarded the apocryphal books with suspicion, even though they were part of the devotional literature of the Christian church for most of its history.
